appearance

Tall, dark and handsome is a phrase that would apply to Kurogane, particularly the tall and dark part. Almost inhumanly long of limb and torso, he tends to tower over almost everyone he meets and has a whole lot of leg and arm for being relatively lean, features that should make him somewhat awkward and gangling, but there's nothing awkward about Kurogane in motion. For his own size he's fairly lean but again, this is relative--he's got real muscle in his limbs and his shoulders are quite broad.

Kurogane's skin looks tanned; his eyes are a brown color that sometimes appears reddish and his hair is black and cut into short spikes, with some sparse longer strands that fall over his eyes. His left arm has apparently been severed and replaced with a metal prosthesis. He tends to wear the native clothes of whatever world he's in (or simply what's on hand) though he favors black, fitting into the somewhat menacing air he usually likes to project. His face is fairly inexpressive; he tends not to show emotion on the surface beyond small smiles or threatening glares--the only time it becomes abundantly clear what he's feeling is when someone has annoyed him.

personality

On the surface, Kurogane seems easy to pin down as taciturn, aloof, and more brawn than brain, and while he does possess some of these characteristics, there's much more to him than that. His personality is usually very serious and straightforward; Kurogane tends to take life and the people around him seriously and doesn't quite know how to loosen up and joke around, to the point that he often reacts to other people's joking with him with over-exaggerated annoyance because he doesn't know how else to respond. In spite of his snappishness and flailing about at these moments he never harms anyone (unless pinching a certain white manju's cheeks count) and usually simply prompts yet more laughter and joking at his expense. He's not without a sense of humor as evidenced by small smiles at things he finds amusing, and it's entirely possible that he simply plays along with his overreactions to jokes at his expense with a group of people he feels comfortable with.

In spite of projecting a menacing, irreverent, lone-wolf air, especially to people who don't know him well, Kurogane is very loyal and compassionate. He's a skilled fighter and doesn't hesitate to threaten or, if it comes to that, attack people who threaten him or anyone he wants to protect, but he very rarely kills and believes that a sword should be used to cut only when absolutely necessary. He does what he can to take care of the people around him, and although he may appear aloof he is in fact very perceptive; almost nothing escapes him. He notices when people are lying or hiding something, when they're depressed and in pain, and not to mention when they need a swift kick in the right direction, but it's not his nature to point out these things or reveal what he notices until he truly needs to. He will try to give small pieces of advice and guidance in roundabout ways instead, though if anyone he cares about is about to do something truly stupid or harmful he will stop them, by force if necessary. He also won't hesitate to sacrifice anything necessary to save someone he cares about.

Kurogane's an extremely talented swordsman and a decent fighter with or without any other kind of weapon in his hand. He's very strong physically, though he tends to hold back from fights because he doesn't like to hurt others unless necessary. As mentioned above, his perception is one of his mental strengths, usually being able to discern what the people around him are feeling or whether they're lying or hiding something.

weaknesses

Kurogane is something of a loner and until he feels comfortable with a person or group of people he will not know how to act around them, and even when he does feel comfortable he still tends to be fairly quiet. He reacts exaggeratedly to annoyances, and keeps his own problems to himself, paying more attention to others' pain than his own, sometimes at the cost of his mental health. His left arm (the prosthesis) does not seem to mesh well with his body; though fully functional, it often bleeds at the stump and causes his pain.

history

Kurogane was born the son of the lord and the priestess of Suwa Province in the country of Nihon, both of whom protected their land and people--his father with the sword, his mother by maintaining a magical barrier called a kekkai that kept demons out. The young Kurogane was an outgoing, energetic child who was devoted to both his mother and father and determined to follow in his father's footsteps as a warrior of Suwa. He trained with a katana and had a happy life until he became a teenager and realized that his mother was afflicted with tuberculosis.

This discovery was a turning point, as his life soon thereafter took a very dark turn. His father had been away from home much of the time fighting demons, and returned to take up the heirloom sword of the family, Ginryuu, needing more power. When Kurogane's father left, his mother insisted on being brought to her place of prayer to strength the kekkai and pray for success against the demons. There Kurogane saw his mother impaled on a giant sword held by a hand that came from a rift in dimensions, and held her in his arms as she died. With her death the kekkai broke and demons invaded Suwa; Kurogane watched one of them devour the arm of his father which was still holding Ginryuu, leaving only the sword in front of the boy. At that sight Kurogane simply snapped; in a state of mindless rage he destroyed all of the demons and took on all of the ninja that the empress of Nihon sent to subdue him, having discovered him in this state some hours later. But her younger sister, Tomoyo, was the one who finally calmed Kurogane, telling him to let his mother sleep. She took him to Shirasagi Castle, where his wounds were healed.

As a young adult Kurogane dedicated his life to Princess Tomoyo, becoming her loyal servant. Much less conscious about taking lives, Kurogane killed any and all assassins who attacked Shirasagi Castle without abandon, against Princess Tomoyo's wishes; in spite of this dispute, he and the princess seem to have been very close. Even so, Princess Tomoyo eventually decided to send Kurogane against his wishes to Yuuko, the dimensional witch, in the hopes that a fresh journey would teach him the true meaning of strength.

In Yuuko's domain Kurogane met Syaoran, Sakura, Fye D. Flowright, and Mokona, who would become his companions. At the time he wanted nothing to do with the journey to find Sakura's feathers, but accompanied the group anyway in the hopes that crossing dimensions in search of the feathers would eventually bring him back to Nihon. Despite his initial reluctance, Kurogane soon became just as dedicated to the journey as everyone else in the group, and came to care for his companions and look after them in a quiet, mother hen-ish kind of way. He became particularly close to Fye, who he initially seemed to dislike and be annoyed with often for Fye's habit of calling him by cutsey nicknames. In the world of Tokyo, when Fye's eye was gouged out by Syaoran's clone and he seemed on the brink of death due to shock, Kurogane had Kamui and Subaru save his life by turning him into a vampire and voluntarily became his "prey", i.e. his source of blood, telling a reluctant Fye that if he wanted to die so bad Kurogane would kill him himself, but in the meantime he'd better keep living.

From then on he looked after Fye in particular, making sure that he drank Kurogane's blood when necessary; he also quietly tried to keep the whole group from turning to hopelessness and despair through the difficult times that faced them. When Kurogane and Fye were trapped together in the cursed world of Celes, with seemingly only one of them being able to escape, Kurogane ignored Fye telling him to save himself and cut off his own arm as a sacrifice to be able to pull Fye out with him.

He woke up in his home world of Nihon with his wounds bandaged and Princess Tomoyo at his side. She asked him if he'd learned the meaning of true strength, to which Kurogane answered that he didn't know, but that he didn't regret giving up his arm for Fye, and that he realized some things can't be protected by physical strength alone.

Kurogane was given a highly advanced prosthetic arm to replace the one he lost, brought to him from the technologically advanced world of Piffle. Later that night he spoke with Tomoyo, telling her that he had decided to leave Nihon Country once again to help Syaoran and Fye save Sakura, but vowed to her that he was forever her servant and would return to her when he could. Tomoyo accepted his vow, calling him by his true name, Youou. That night he went to sleep in Nihon, but woke up in Manhattan.
